The shortleaf pine prefers a well-drained, light,saiidy or gravelly clay soil, or warm light loam; while the loblolly, oftenstruggling with the shortleaf for the possession of the soil, can adaptitself to wetter situations. CHARACTERISTICS OF DISTRIBUTION IN DIFFERENT REGIONS. LONGLEAF PINE. Tliis pine occurs in all the South Atlantic and Gulf States at somedistance from the coast, covering a belt of about 125 miles in width,intermitted only by the alluvial plains of the Mississippi and Eed riversin Louisiana and Texas.
